I Should Have Sewn...: Tutorial Thursday- Vyvian Dress.

In an effort to get back into the habit of making sewing related post. I give you this weeks Tute Thursday. This adorable little dress is super simple. I'd recommend it as a great beginner dress since it only requires 3 buttons and buttonholes.

Supplies:
1/2 yd your choice of fabric(s). (I chose the Tattoo print and solid red.)
3 buttons
Straight pins
Sewing machine (or needles If your brave enough to hand sew)
Matching thread
Scissors
Pattern

Steps:

1. Gather all materials and supplies. Its best to gather everything you may need before hand instead of having to run around looking for it.

2. Make sure your fabric is pre-washed and Ironed. When making clothing (actually anything.) you always want to pre-shrink the fabric so that way the garment fits properly.

3. Pin and cut out your pieces. Make sure when using prints/ stripes/ plaids so pay attention to the way the print is going. Otherwise you may end up with onside the correct way and the other upside down or side ways. Always pay attention to grain lines on the pattern pieces.

4. Working with the facing pieces, sew the sides and shoulder seams together. Zigzag (or overcast/ serge) the raw edges.

5. Hem the bottom of the Facing piece

6. Working with the dress pieces, Sew the sides and shoulder seams just like on the facing pieces. Overcast/zigzag/serge the edges.

7. Sew a gathering stitch ( longest stitch length possible on your machine) at the top of the sleeve.

8. Sew sleeve seam together. Overcast edges

9. Pin the facing to the dress, right sides together, then sew the neck line and clip seam allowance to help with puckering on the curved seams.

10. Pin and sew sleeves to the dress. Making sure gathers are at the top of the sleeve. Over cast the edges.

11. Press and pin 1-1/4 in on one side of back of dress. Turn in raw edges 1/4 in. and Sew. This is where the button holes will be placed.

12. On other back piece, sew a 1/4 in. rolled hem (by pressing 1/4 inch then pressing that over 1/4inch again.) We're just finishing the seams here. This is the side were the buttons will go.
